Johnson Sign Co. has been a trusted full service sign partner for 60 years. Providing design, manufacturing and installation services of exterior and interior signage, we handle a wide range of project sizes, from a single business to a business with a nationwide footprint. Our sales, design, production, install and service teams have the expertise to meet our clients’ vision to final completion.
Johnson Sign Co. specializes in custom electric signage including monument signs (ground signs), pylon signs (pole signs), wall signs, wall letters (channel letters), awnings, electronic message centers, tenant signs, interior signage, LED signs, illuminated signs, vinyl graphics, neon signs and much more.

1964
JOHNSON SIGN CO. OPENS
James “Jim” Johnson noticed a need that almost every business had: for good signs to brand and identify consumers’ businesses. With his loving wife’s (Beverly) approval, along with 6 young children at home, he took the risk and put it all on the line to open Johnson Sign Co.
1988
JOHNSON SIGN CO. HAS NEW OWNERSHIP
James “Jay” Johnson grew up in the business. After working for a large national sign company in California, Jay returned to Michigan to take over the family business.
2014
JOHNSON SIGN CO. BECOMES THIRD GENERATION BUSINESS
Sons of Jay Johnson, Jim and Will become third generation owners along side their dad.
2016
JOHNSON SIGN CO. ACQUIRES DOUGLAS SIGN COMPANY
Douglas Sign Company was started in the basement of Douglas Fulk in 1968 just out of the Army. Doug purchased a location in 1974. Johnson Sign Co. acquired Douglas Sign Company in 2016, expanding into the Lansing market and adding a second location to the company footprint.
2017
JOHNSON SIGN CO. ACQUIRES HURON SIGN COMPANY
Founded in 1966 by Bill and Greg Short, Huron Sign Co. has been a family business ever since. Nine of the ten siblings spent the majority of their working career at Huron Sign, and many are still here today. In 2017, Johnson Sign Co. acquired Huron Sign Co. located in Ypsilanti.
2022
JOHNSON SIGN CO. ACQUIRES AMOR SIGN STUDIOS
Starting in 1946, William Henry Amor grew Amor Sign Studios from hand-painted to electrical signs. The business remained in the family, passing down to Thomas E. Amor in 1971. His son Tom H. Amor joined the business in 1987 and remains on the JSC team with several Amor co-workers. In 2022, JSC acquired Amor Sign and expanded the company footprint to the northern Michigan area.
2024
JOHNSON SIGN CO. CELEBRATES 60 YEARS IN BUSINESS
Since opening in 1964, the Johnson Sign Co. business has grown and evolved in more ways than one. The expansion of five locations and manufacturing/installation capabilities have made JSC one of the largest custom full service sign companies in the state of Michigan. Over the years JSC has had the opportunity to manufacture and install signage for major hospital conversions, national bank accounts, iconic large custom signage and everything in between.
While we are proud of our ability to change and evolve with the needs of our customers and the market, we are most proud of the core values that the business was founded on and continue to live on today. These fundamental core values are what have allowed us to be in business for this long. Through the past 60 years we are proud to work alongside loyal customers and JSC employees. Our successes are a result of those relationships.
We celebrate the hope of the future and the next 60 years as we are excited to continue to build relationships, both existing and new, and continue to offer a great product.
