City of Sterling Heights

31870 Van Dyke Ave, Suite 100 Sterling Heights, MI 48310

The Challenge

As part of a major roadway improvement project, the City of Sterling Heights reconstructed the median along one of its primary corridors to create a more attractive entrance into the community. While the infrastructure improvements transformed the roadway, the city had never had a true gateway welcoming residents and visitors into Sterling Heights. They needed a signature entrance feature that would complement the new median, reflect the city’s identity, and create a memorable first impression. Johnson Sign Co. was selected to design, fabricate, and install a gateway monument that would become a lasting landmark for the community.

The Solution

Johnson Sign Co. partnered with the City of Sterling Heights to design, fabricate, and install two custom gateway monuments that now welcome residents and visitors at this key entrance to the city. Each monument features an internally illuminated aluminum cabinet with routed faces, creating a clean, dimensional appearance during the day and excellent visibility at night. Halo lighting at the top and bottom of each cabinet adds a subtle architectural glow, while stone veneer bases complement the surrounding streetscape and provide a timeless, durable foundation. Together, the two gateway monuments create a cohesive entrance that reinforces Sterling Heights’ identity and provides a memorable first impression.

The Result

The completed gateway monuments transformed what was once an unmarked entrance into a recognizable gateway that reflects the pride and identity of Sterling Heights. Positioned within the newly reconstructed median, the monuments create a strong sense of arrival for residents and visitors while complementing the surrounding streetscape improvements. Built with durable, low-maintenance materials and illuminated for day and nighttime visibility, the gateways provide a lasting landmark that will welcome the community for years to come.
