The Challenge
The City of Midland’s existing gateway sign was small, dated, and easy for passing motorists to overlook. Recognizing an opportunity to create a more welcoming entrance, the Midland Area Community Foundation initiated the project and donated a prominent new gateway sign that would improve visibility both day and night.
The new sign needed to complement an existing gateway sign elsewhere in Midland while responding to the unique conditions of this location. Because the site featured a stacked-stone wall, a standard flat sign would not feel naturally integrated into the landscape. The structure needed to follow the wall’s curve, work with the existing electrical service, and comply with MDOT right-of-way requirements.
At 20 feet long and more than six feet tall, the size and curved construction of the new gateway sign also required careful planning for fabrication, structural support, lighting, and installation.
The Solution
The project began with the removal and recycling of the existing sign. In its place, we designed, fabricated, and installed a large convex-curved gateway sign that follows the shape of the stacked-stone wall. The custom curve helps the sign feel like an intentional part of the site while maintaining a visual connection to Midland’s existing gateway signage.
For strong visibility after dark, the sign features halo-lit channel letters. Each letter is illuminated with high-efficiency internal LED modules and power supplies. Clear Lexan backs help protect the letter interiors from pests while allowing the light to create a clean halo effect. A perforated aluminum background panel provides a reflective surface that enhances the glow and improves nighttime legibility.
The lower portion of the sign was constructed with roll-formed, three-inch aluminum square-tube framing and inset color panels. This combination provided the strength needed to create the sweeping curved form while delivering a clean, finished appearance.
The completed structure was mounted on two new steel support poles set in direct-burial concrete footings. The installation reused the site’s existing electrical circuit, with its location modified as necessary to serve the new illuminated sign. The proposed placement was also reviewed and approved by MDOT, confirming that the sign would be installed outside the right-of-way.
The Result
The finished gateway sign transformed an understated entrance into a prominent and welcoming landmark for Midland. Its substantial scale gives it a strong presence from the roadway, while the curved form follows the existing stonework and fits naturally into the surrounding landscape.
During the day, the dimensional letters, architectural framing, and inset panels provide a polished appearance consistent with the City’s identity. At night, the halo-lit lettering creates a distinctive glow that keeps the gateway visible and recognizable around the clock.
Since completing the gateway sign, our team has continued working with the City on a comprehensive wayfinding program encompassing more than 200 signs.
