It all began in the summer of 1964, when Jim Johnson decided to take a leap of faith and move his wife and six children to Jackson, Michigan for a business opportunity. Jim purchased a large portion of the shares of Thompson Sign and the company became Thompson & Johnson Sign Co. Jim purchased the remaining shares from his partners in 1969, and the company became Johnson Sign Co. Jim's hard work ethic and steadfast morals drove the company to the top of the sign industry.

Jay Johnson, current President of Johnson Co., was born into the sign company that his father started. At a young age, Jay dedicated himself to preserving and building his father's reputation. After receiving his bachelor's degree in business from Ferris State University, Jay moved to California in 1981 to take a position with a large sign company specializing in corporate image accounts. Jay moved back to Michigan in 1984, and purchased the company from his father in 1988.

Jay Johnson continues to enhance the growth of the business by developing and implementing the latest technological advancements in the sign industry. His vision and goals have positioned Johnson Sign Co. as the leading custom sign company in the state of Michigan.
